马术治疗之所以能改善自闭症儿童的精神和生理状态，是由于马背上的节律性运动能够显著提高儿童的平衡感和感知力，患有自闭症的儿童有先天大脑发育障碍，很多“星儿”不能集中注意力，而坐在马背上随着马匹的平衡移动，有助于儿童大脑平衡发育。对自闭症儿童而言，在治疗中利用感觉统合技术介入治疗，提供触觉（又包括压觉、温觉）、前庭觉、本体感觉等感觉输入及经验，当人感受到这些刺激，就会产生改善语言、注意力、变化情绪及行为的效果。
